DOCOSAPENTAENOIC ACID (DPA)
Indigenous Peoples that have hunted seals since forever have long known about the health benefits that come from seal blubber.
Western science is only now just starting to catch up and illustrate the mechanisms and reasons why.
Like fish oil, seal oil contains the essential omega-3 fats EPA and DHA. But unlike fish oils, only seal oil has a naturally high level of the omega-3 called DPA.
1.
DPA is naturally found all throughout the human body including the blood, brain, eyes, and heart.
In fact, breast milk has high levels of DPA, suggesting an important role in human development.
2.
DPA is involved in making Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediators (SPMs) - the body's natural way of switching off the inflammation process.
In other words, DPA leads to the production of its own anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving molecules.
3.
DPA boosts all omega-3 levels and can be converted in the body to both EPA and DHA, allowing the body to use different fatty acids as needed.
Think of it as an omega-3 with its own benefits and something of a "resource manager" for other omega-3s.
YOUR BODY NEEDS FATTY ACIDS LIKE DPA TO HELP THE INFLAMMATION RESPONSE WORK PROPERLY
This might surprise you, but fats actually play a very big role in how the body deals with managing your health, including the inflammation response.
This makes getting enough omega-3s from what you put in your mouth very important to your health since you'll see that your body needs omega-3 fatty acids for biological processes, but can't make enough of them on its own.
Fatty acids (like DPA) are used in the body to create the signaling molecules that start and stop these processes. Scientists refer to these fats as bioactive lipids, since it's been discovered that they have specific roles in health. These bioactive lipids are synthesized by the body as they are needed.
As we'll see just below, omega-3s like DPA play an important part in both roles as an anti-inflammatory and resolving inflammation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hey wait aren't seals endangered?
Not at all. The harp seal population from which our oil comes from is actually increasing. You don’t have to believe us. Visit IUCN Red List website and see for yourself.
What happens to the rest of the seal that’s not used for oil?
After the seal is hunted, it’s separated into three parts. The blubber is what’s used for the oil, the meat is used for, well, meat, and the pelts are used for clothes and artwork. If you’re interested, you can buy the pelts from us here.
But the bab...
Stop right there. Baby seals (the white coats that are still nursing that everyone thinks about when they think of seals) are simply not being hunted and they haven’t been for a long time. While we're at it, you should know that the vast majority of the seals are hunted with rifles. Might want to look at the WWE's position on the seal hunt too while you're at it...
Is this sustainable?
Quite simply, we wouldn't be doing this if it weren't. Seals have been hunted on this continent for thousands of years and we don't intend to ruin it for the generations after us. Everything is interrelated and interdependent. We believe that us humans are not intended to conquer and control the natural world, but to live in balance within it.
How is quality of the oil ensured?
The seal oil itself is made according to the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines. Every facility used holds a Site License issued by good ol' Health Canada. Every single batch is independently third-party tested to make sure it meets our purity and quality standards.
What are the benefits of DPA?
Here's the short answer:
Why have I never heard about DPA before?
Beats us. Which can seem kind of odd when you consider that DPA is needed by the human body and is even present in human breast milk, suggesting a pretty important role in human development.
If we had to hazard a guess, it *might* be because large amounts of the scientific research on omega-3s come from fish oils, which are high in EPA and DHA, but lack DPA.
Are there any scientific studies on DPA or seal oil?
Definitely! You can check out a list of scientific studies here.
What's the recommended doses?
Here's what's recommended by Health Canada:
Children (6-13 years old): 4 capsules per day
Children (13-18 years old): 4 capsules per day
Adults: 6 capsules per day
6 softgels a day?!
Sure sounds like a lot, doesn't it? The capsules themselves are quite a bit smaller than most "one a day" fish oil pills you may have seen, making them very easy to swallow. To meet Health Canada requirements, we basically had to make a choice between smaller capsules but more of them, or bigger capsules but fewer. Swallowing pills can be hard for some people, so we chose the option that would make it easier for more people.
Why can't I buy this in the EU and the USA?
Politics and propaganda, pretty much. Ask yourself, if it was really about animal welfare than why has the EU allowed for the cull of seals by their members? In America, any seal-product is barred from importation into the States as it violates the Endangered Species Act... despite the harp seal population growing and being a species of least concern... We could go on, but we'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.
Is this product approved/regulated to sell?
You better believe it. Our seal oil is approved by Health Canada and has met all their stringent regulations. Our Natural Product Number is 80094421.
Who shouldn't take this?
First, let us say that you should always check with your doctor first before trying any new kind of supplement for your health. People with already very low blood pressure or taking blood thinners should really consult their doctor first and be extra cautious.
